Where do you find inspiration?

What are your most valuable design resources?

Asked by: Claire Eckstrom - RIT Student

We all know that there are a slew of design books and magazines available at local books stores and your university library. Communication Arts, PRINT and HOW being the top magazines. Books by Rockport usually have a great selection of excellent design examples.

A few years back I created a web page that functions as a hub for students (and my browser start-up page). It lists a sample of the top blogs, podcasts and web portals. These are resources that publish often. So I check back often and find great things. INSPIRATION ANYWHERE

Non0design resources that I find inspirational are various podcasts on cooking, wine, food and DIY culture (make). Just go to iTunes and subscribe to some podcasts. I love them because I can keep on doing my work on the computer and listen to them. Ok... a couple more things that I find amazing to listen to... THIS AMERICAN LIFE and RADIOLAB

Finally, a motherload of design is the AIGA Design Archives.

I use my iGoogle page as a source of daily inspiration. It's set as my browser's home page, so I see it every morning as I drink my coffee. I read the news headlines and have gadgets for daily art, quotes and words, etc.

I have a gadget for Google Reader too. The reader groups all of my blog subscriptions and creates an interface where I can scroll through them all easily.

On the low-tech side, I collect fruit stickers and like to review the type on all of my purchase receipts — for the merits and horrors alike.

I find inspiration when I get out of my day to day regime. Sure I check my RSS feeds and get a daily dose of Print or CA, but when I get really inspired is when I leave the studio and go to a museum or go gallery hopping. It doesn't necessarily have to be a design show, but just something that feeds the right side of the brain. I especially enjoy shows that have a bit of history relating art to the sign of the times. For example, I was recently in Denver and visited the Denver Art Museum. The architecture of the space was enough to get me thinking as none of the walls are on right angles, but the show I saw was posters from the Fillmore East, Haight Ashbury days of the late 1960's. These poster artists who got paid literally nothing, to promote what are now legendary rock'n roll shows, were amazing and unbelievably inspirational as they messed with our readability of text and colour. I came back refreshed, excited and full of ideas.

So get outside of your day to day. Go see some art.
