It has been a very busy month across the upstate! All good news.
I added a VIDEO UPDATE. I hope this is helpful or at least mildly informative! It's been fun putting together.
Many have turned out for the Creative Eats across the state. We have received lots of positive feedback and requests to "do it again". The next step is to band together and execute a project or event. Let us know what you are planning and how we can help each other.
If you are a member and have "News", please contact us and let us know about your success. Many people have asked me two things: Who are AIGA UPSTNY members? and what do they do? Creative Eats is helping identify other creatives locally, but what about across the state? One way would be to help add content to the web site by submitting articles. Some call it shameless self-promotion. I call it networking.
Have a great month,
Bill Klingensmith | AIGA UPSTNY - President
How to make confrontation dialog as easy as eating a bag of peanuts!
Giving a difficult performance review. Saying ‘no’ to someone. Firing a client or initiating discussion to find ways you can work better together. These can be difficult conversations we all avoid for a variety of reasons.

A few times this past week, Shepard Fairey was in the news. Lawsuits, arrest warrants and an retrospective exhibition!
First, this is something that many of the creatives in our community have various opinions on Shepard Fairey’s (http://obeygiant.com) “use of Barack Obama’s image from Associated Press Photographer, Mannie Garcia for the very successful “HOPE campaign. NYT Article UK Times Article.
This is an article that will hopefully get you to reflect on what it is that we do in our industry. “The Creativity of Crowds is an article posted on Forbe’s Magazine web site that spotlights “A new model to the Graphic Design business.
It is a competitive model that encourages “spec work with flat rates and bids on design. The article reads more like an advertorial for web site “Crowdspring.com.
This is another offering from AIGA that you can participate ... in your home or office. This one is organized by the members of AIGA San Francisco.
AIGA has many intiatives, one of them is: SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. This conference will be held on Saturday, Feburary 23, 2009. You can fly out to San Francisco or you can participate online with their WEBCAST. This is a great way to save a lot of money traveling and learn from the leaders in the movement.
Please, share this with your design friends everywhere. The UPSTNY board encourages this type of event for all designers in our community.
What this also means is the time of year to enter the AIGA annual design competition: 365 and 50 books/50 covers for the upcoming year. I have added some information on our web site with links to the submission form.
This competition is ONLY open to members! Yes, one more good reason to become a member of AIGA UPSTNY.
