April 2009 - Newsletter

There are many new design events happening in the coming weeks. To mention the newest additions to the calendar: The Albany Design community has banded together and scheduled a Student Portfolio Review. The RIT Student Group has confirmed another showing of Beautiful Losers! It is great to see such great leadership from various areas of our community.

It is that time of year again to put out the call for nominations for your board. If you would like to become involved in the chapter board, please send your inquiries to us. With all the new energy in the chapter, it is a great time to get involved and assist in strengthening the Upstate Design Community. We will be publishing a list of open positions in the coming weeks.

Thank you for getting involved!

Review of March Nitty Gritty "Abdication, Delegation or MicroManagement: What’s Your Style?"

by Lori Reed

Another great teleforum was led by professional graphic design business coach Pam Bryan this month. This time the topic was  “Abdication, Delegation or MicroManagement: What’s Your Style?. Interestingly enough, it appeared that this was actually attended mostly by those feeling frustrated from being micromanaged more than anything else. Tools for how to identify and how to cure this negative behavior and how to become a better delegator were discussed.

Students Ask, Professionals Reply

qaThe school year is wrapping up and students have a lot on their mind. We have created an online dialogue to help answer questions that may not have been answered in your studies. The extension of this is to offer an opportunity for students to directly ask a panel of professionals for their feedback.

We have a tentative date to hold this type of panel in Rochester. Tuesday April 28 @ 6:30 on the RIT Campus. The goal is to have students present tough questions that they are burning to know the answers and have the professionals give honest feedback. We hope to video the dialogue and make it available in our Q+A section of the web site.

We will let you know more about this event when we confirm the details.
