Design Educator Dialogues is a symposium to highlight local knowledge and expertise while exploring the opportunities and challenges of teaching in Upstate New York. This is an opportunity for area educators to get to know each other and our area schools. We encourage educators at all levels (K-12, Undergraduate, and Graduate) to participate. The day has been designed to emphasize dialogue and creative problem solving and will focus on topics raised by our educator community.

• 1:20PM - 2:00PM From the Ground Up: Foundation Studies in Graphic Design Curriculum hosted by Amy Papaelias & Dimitry Tetin, SUNY New Paltz
•  As design education faces increasing pressure from industry expectations and accrediting bodies to accommodate an ever-expanding list of emergent practices, skills and outcomes, what should a graphic design foundation experience look like? This discussion will focus on the opportunities and challenges facing design programs and invites educators to share their experiences with adapting, building and delivering foundation curriculum.
• 2:00PM - 2:40PM Balancing Academia and Your Creative Work hoste by Cara Brewer Thompson, SUNY Oswego
• As educators, we seek to lead and inspire creativity in others, but rarely take time to nurture our own creativity.This roundtable will brainstorm ways to manage the demands of academia and still produce work that makes us fulfilled and productive designers and artists.
• 2:40PM - 2:50PM Break
• 2:50PM - 3:30PM Critique: Tactics and Methods hosted by Mitch Goldstein, RIT
• This roundtable will examine tactics and strategies that design educators can use to engage their students in critique and feedback inside and outside of the classroom. A variety of methods, from the archetypal "group crit," to alternative ideas like speed-dating critiques, written feedback, and online tools will be discussed.
• 3:30PM - 4:10PM Good Work Good Cause hosted by Judy Livingston, New York Stat College of Ceramics at Alfred University
• The roundtable session, Good Work Good Cause, will share examples of student work addressing important social, political, and economic issues. The goal of the session is to plan more ways to engage the intellectual and creative power of the design process in the context of design education as a powerful tool to help solve local, national, and global issues.
